Shar-Pei

The Shar-Pei: An insight into the fascinating world of the Chinese wrinkle dog.

The Shar-Pei, also known as the Chinese wrinkle dog, is a fascinating dog breed from China. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) has assumed responsibility for the development and maintenance of the breed standard. In the 1970s, the Shar-Pei was considered extremely rare and threatened with extinction. Today, the situation has improved and the breed is becoming increasingly popular.

Origin and history

The exact origin of the Shar-Pei is disputed among experts. Illustrations of similar dogs date back to the 2nd century BC during the Han Dynasty. It is assumed that Chow dogs were crossed with western Mastiffs, which reached China via trade routes. Another theory is that the Shar-Pei is descended from an extinct larger dog that lived in northern China and Tibet around 2000 years ago. Although its exact origins are uncertain, the Shar-Pei has a rich history as a hunting, herding and guard dog.

Shar-Pei

Saved from extinction

In the 1970s, the Shar-Pei was on the verge of extinction in its homeland when the Chinese government drastically increased the dog tax. The breeder Matgo Law from Hong Kong launched an appeal for help in an American dog magazine, which attracted the attention of dog lovers all over the world. The increasing demand caused prices for Shar-Pei puppies to skyrocket, but also led to the dogs developing excessive wrinkles. This led to skin problems and other health issues.

Character and temperament

Despite its past as a fighting dog, the Shar-Pei has a friendly and affectionate nature. However, he can occasionally show his dominant Mastiff heritage and clash with housemates. It is rather reserved towards strangers, but cheerful. Proper socialization and training are crucial, as the Shar-Pei has a strong and independent personality. It is not suitable for life in kennels, but will become a spirited and affectionate companion if it lives in its family home.

Care and special features

The Shar-Pei’s characteristic wrinkles require special attention to avoid skin problems. Although it has a robust constitution, it requires appropriate care due to its special skin structure. In puppies, the wrinkles should be controlled to avoid problems such as entropion. Since the Shar-Pei has short, bristly hair, grooming is generally not very time-consuming.

Unique characteristics and appearance

Characteristic of the Shar-Pei are the tightly curled tail, the small, close-fitting ears and the blue to black-blue tongue. With a shoulder height of up to 51 centimetres and a weight of around 23 kilograms, it is a medium-sized, compact dog. Males are generally larger than females.

Shar-Pei

A special companion

The Shar-Pei has had an eventful history, from being a threat to being saved from extinction. Today, it is a fascinating companion with a friendly nature and unique external characteristics. Proper care and training are crucial to unlocking the full potential of this special dog breed. If you are looking for a loyal and unique pet, the Shar-Pei could be just right for you.
